CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORDChildren's Liturgy of the Word introduces children to both the structure of liturgical worship and the experience of worship so they grow in the understanding and love of God. The Scripture readings are presented to the children at an age appropriate level, along with an interactive homily and activity; a children's bulletin is distributed as a take home activity.
Children's Liturgy of the Word meets most Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM Mass and is open to all children ages three through first grade. Children will come to church with their parents. At the beginning of Mass, the catechist of the day and all of the children will be called forward to the front of the church. The children then process out of church to the Parish Center Youth Room and will return to Mass around the Presentation of Gifts.

Children's Liturgy of the Word stems from the idea that the readings should be accessible to all members of our faith community. While the normal readings at Mass are important, they aren't usually developmentally appropriate for young children. We use CLOW to help young students make meaningful connections with the teachings of the readings by making them relevant to experiences that young children might understand. In some way, CLOW functions as a version of Sunday School for our younger parishioners.
Volunteers Needed

We are seeking energetic and motivated volunteers to assist with leading Children's Liturgy of the Word. This is a great position for teenagers or young adults who are looking to get involved in our faith community with a small commitment. We ask that you arrive 10 minutes before the 9:30 AM Mass and let Fr. Gary know that you are here to lead Children's Liturgy of the Word.
When the children are dismissed, you will lead them to the lower level of the Parish Center to lead them in the readings and the discussion. No need to worry about creating discussion questions--they will be provided for you, along with answers for each of them. Upon completion, you can hand out the children's bulletin for that week and give them some time to look through it and do an activity. After 30 minutes, you can return the kiddos back to Mass through the Cook St. center doors.
If you are interested in learning more about how to volunteer with Children's Liturgy of the Word, please contact our Director of Religious Education & Evangelization Hannah Haseley at hhaseley@stmaryotic.org or by calling the Parish office at 608-742-6998 ext. 217.
